The Faith Academy of Marble Falls football team completed several weeks of 6-on-6 touch football.

The Flames played each Tuesday in June.

Head coach Jay Silvers pointed out the many positives for the teams that participated – Austin Royals and Round Rock Christian. The Flames even played the Lampasas junior varsity in 7 on 7 during one week.

“We have some wide receivers who can move, whether it’s laterally or up the field,” he said. “

In many ways, all-state track athletes Graham McGraw and Egan Barnes play the position in a way that excites fans and compel coaches to get them the ball.

“Graham does a great job,” Silvers said. “He’s improved so much, especially catching the ball in traffic. He’s done a great job in the last three weeks. He’ll get right in between defenders and hands in his face, and he comes up with the ball. Egan’s done a great job.”

The coach was equally enthusiastic about Chase Schorre and Mason Clark.

“Chase Schorre has done an excellent job,” he said. “We have a freshman coming out, Mason Clark. He is picking it up pretty well. He figures out the little lanes, and he has some wheels on him. I have a stable of receivers to pull from, and that’ll help with Wade (Dillard) and Landon (Silvers), especially on the offensive side of the ball.”

Dillard and Landon Silvers, the coach’s son, split time at quarterback. Jay Silvers knows their skill sets well. So what has he asked them to work on this summer?

“We’ve worked with Wade to be that senior leader out there during the offense, during the drills, just being that guy they can rely on,” he said. “Wade’s always been one of the positive guys; he’s always building them up. He’s done a great job with that ever since I started coaching him back in flag football, he’s always been that way. With Landon, we’ve worked with him on getting some of these younger guys that have similar skill sets to him working with them on their abilities and him just encouraging them. And so he’s done a great job. They’ve both been excellent out there when they’re out there on offense together, the way they talk to the team and get everybody lined up and knowing what to do.”

Lampasas contacted defensive coordinator Garrett Cole about the possibility of scheduling a night of 7 on 7 even though the Flames play six-man football.

“I just thought the more we practice and the more things we see, the better we’ll get,” Jay Silvers said. “And we saw a lot of good things at what they were doing, especially on the coverage stuff. We did a lot of route stuff that we’ve been wanting to work a whole lot on and we’ve been working on this summer. We were able to move the ball pretty well, it helped our defense. They have a little more speed out there than what we’ve seen with Round Rock and the Royals, not just the one guy that’s really fast. They had probably three or four guys that could move pretty good. And so that really helped us defensively, knowing down and distance, knowing how to cover the guys. when to break, and so it was a lot of good work. That’s what we’re really there for is just a glorified practice, but it was against somebody that’s a very good opponent, and they have some young guys and they got some good athletes over there. So it was good for our young guys to get a lot of playing time.”
